Diplomas
Diplomas will be issued to students upon completion of their degree requirements
(October, December, and May or June), and after approval of the faculty
and Board of Trustees. Students may choose to receive their diploma on real
sheepskin ($90) or on high-quality paper (no charge). Students receiving
their degrees mid-year are eligible to participate in the symbolic
awarding of degrees at the spring commencement exercises. The
diploma will show the student's official or legal name as it appears on
the degree application unless changed in writing by the student prior to
120 days before the graduation date for that student. A late
change requires an additional fee ($165 for sheepskin, $75 for parchment) and
may mean that the diploma would not be available for commencement exercises.
A
replacement diploma in the name of the student as it appeared at
the original time of issue will be provided upon written request of the
student, return of the damaged diploma, if possible, and payment for
materials and printing (replacement fees are currently $165 for
sheepskin, $75 for parchment). The replacement will include appropriate dates,
signatures and notations where possible. Requests for a replacement diploma must
include a daytime mailing address where the diploma can be delivered by
certified mail. If a student's name has
been legally changed by marriage or court order, a new diploma may be issued
upon written request, including legal proof of the change, payment of the
fee, and return of the original diploma. Replacements of diplomas for deceased
alumni by a spouse or child will be considered if accompanied by the
written request noted above, an explanation of the circumstances, a
death certificate, and documentation of the relationship. Washington and
Lee reserves the right to determine whether such a replacement is
possible and appropriate.
Those recipients of a W&L Bachelor of Laws degree
prior to 1970, may "upgrade" their degree and
receive a nunc pro tunc diploma by sending a request to that
effect in writing, with signature, to the University Registrar's Office
along with the current diploma replacement fee. The Alumni Association
and Law School will be notified of the change.
