If you are going on a W&L program (spring term abroad, internship off-campus, etc.), you must still PreRegister and WebRegister for any course for which you want credit. Just because you have met with the course faculty member or paid money to travel abroad, DOES NOT mean you are registered for a course. For those going abroad in the spring term, information will be sent to you via e-mail prior to the end of winter term on how you can express preferences for your fall term courses (see the nota bene below).
Now: You are on-campus for this term and studying away beginning next term through another study-abroad program (not W&L's). You do PreRegistration (fall and winter terms) to avoid being penalized in later terms with 3 pm window start times. You WebRegister for next term in case your non-W&L, study-away program falls through for personal, financial, or political reasons. Please register only for courses you would intend to take; registering for "just any old course" doesn't help you if you must return to campus, penalizes your fellow students who really need a certain course; and misleads the faculty who are trying to gauge real interest in a course. As you are preparing to leave the country -- about two weeks prior to classes beginning here -- we will delete your on-campus registration and replace it with INTR 998, study abroad, or INTR 999, US exchange or study off-campus, to indicate your appropriate credit load.
Then: If you are away from campus during the PreRegistration and WebRegistration periods, we don't require you to take part, though it is certainly to your advantage to do so if you have access to a web browser. Often, students plan to go abroad and then for some reason -- health, financial, change of plans -- they want to return to campus. If you have properly registered and received a time-specific schedule, your course choices remain active until we confirm you are studying away, at which time they are cancelled to open up spaces for others.
While you are away, the University Registrar's staff will take care of PreRegistration for you (there isn't one for spring-term courses). If you don't have access to a browser for WebRegistration, you may ask your adviser to do your WebRegistration for you (he or she will already have your new password). Just communicate your course choices for the coming term to your adviser as soon as you can -- through e-mail, fax, or "snail-mail."
NB: For W&L students going on W&L spring term trips, we will give students an opportunity to do a preliminary "absentee" selection of fall term courses from the new course catalog (see Catalogs ). It's a version of the paper drop/add process in that you select your courses, get signatures for everything and then drop it off at our office. We will let you know late in March when you should come in to pick up a new catalogue and an absentee-registration packet. Then, when the time for PreRegistration and WebRegistration comes around in May, the University Registrar's Office adds your course selections to the web system at the assigned hour. This does not give you a higher priority than if you were studying on campus. If you get access to a computer, you are welcome to change your selections, and registration opens up again for most of the summer so you can make other changes, get off wait lists, etc.
Participate in WebRegistration, if you want to, while you are away. No penalty is assessed if you decide to delay registration until you return.
