General Instructions for Summer PreRegistration by New W&L Students

Welcome to W&L! I look forward to meeting you at the check-in on Saturday, August 30th, if not before. These are the instructions for you to PreRegister for fall term courses, as described in the Guidebook for New Students from Dean of First-Year Students David Leonard which is sent to new students each summer. (Check the Web at http://www.wlu.edu/x7465.xml.)

Important: Information has been sent to your W&L e-mail address about getting your PreRegistration password. Until you retrieve it, you won't be able to access "real" PreRegistration beginning July 23rd. The letter from Dean David Leonard (sent by first-class mail in mid-June) about your W&L e-mail address and access appears here and the instructions for activating e-mail are here.

Important: In early August, the Student Health Center will place a temporary "hold" on all new students' PreRegistration access. It will NOT prevent your PreRegistration. This hold will be lifted once all of the required medical and insurance forms have been received and processed in to our system. The Student Health Center will contact you by email. If you have questions about what health information is still required, please contact Ms. Brenda Clark after August 4 at 540.458.8401 and bclark@wlu.edu.

What is PreRegistration? PreRegistration each term is handled via the Web; for new students for the fall term, it happens between July 23 and August 13. You must PreRegister during the summer for two reasons. First, using the Web page familiarizes you with the "look and feel" of the process you will use to register for classes at W&L, beginning with your fall registration on September 2nd. Second, the courses for which you PreRegister is passed on to your initial faculty adviser who needs it to prepare for your time together during Orientation. PreRegistration is NOT your actual registration and in no way guarantees you priority for the courses you list, but it is critical to the registration process and is not optional. If you would like to practice on PreRegistration, use on the following links:  PreReg Test1  --  PreReg Test2  --  PreReg Test3

Using any standard Web browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Netscape, etc.), access PreRegistration by going to the University Registrar's Web page from the Quicklinks on W&L's home page at http://www.wlu.edu. You will be expected to use the Web and W&L e-mail to do academic research, receive administrative communications, and fulfill other requirements once you enroll at W&L. Once on the University Registrar page, click on the link for "Fall Course Offerings" and review the courses offered during the fall term. You should focus on 100- and 200-level courses, following the advice in the "Curricular Information for New Students" which is also in the Guidebook from the Dean of Freshmen. Other useful links will be WebRegistration, where you can read more about the entire process, and Course Counts so you can see what courses are open and how many spots the faculty have allocated for each class. If you would like to practice on WebRegistration (what you will do with your adviser on Tuesday, September2), use one the following links:  WebReg Test1  --  WebReg Test2  --  WebReg Test3

When you are ready to PreRegister, get back to the University Registrar Web page and click on the link Begin PreRegistration below. Find your User Name by the first letter of the User Name (usually your last name, same as your W&L e-mail address). Next to your name is a link to e-mail your PreRegistration password to your W&L e-mail address. Click it and then check your W&L GroupWise e-mail account.  Once you have retrieved your password (a four-digit number), return to the PreRegistration page and click on Edit, after which you will see a popup login screen where you must type in your User Name in lower case letters and then your PreRegistration password.

The PreRegistration screen has five blank fields and instructions on the right. Follow the instructions! If you change your mind about a course, you may drop a course by clicking "Drop It." Come back as often as you like before midnight (US Eastern Daylight Time,  0400 GMT) on August 13th to make changes. Once you have finished your session, close your browser so no one else will see what you've done or try to change it. If you have questions, first try clicking on a icon on the PreRegistration page. Or you may e-mail us at registrar@wlu.edu, if you really can't find the answer on your own.

I hope you find this an easy process. Enjoy the rest of the summer. See you in September!
